Recommended Books

Below are some books that the leadership team at ChristChurch recommend you read.  We know that not all people are avid readers – if you’re better at listening then most of the books below are available on CD or MP3 download.

We have graded the books 1 through to 5 based on the difficulty level with 1 being what we think is a good easy read, and 5 being a little more taxing on the brain.

The Reason for God

Timothy Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York, presents a case for the rationality of belief in God in The Reason for God. Keller provides some great arguments for those who want to defend their faith to friends and family. Level 4/5

Francis Chan explores the amazing love relationship that God longs to have with those which he created.
A great read for someone who is exploring the Christian faith or has only recently become a Christian and wants to know how crazy, by this worlds standards, God’s love is for us. Level 1/5

Terry VirgoTerry is based at Church of Christ the King, Brighton, UK and is the founder of New Frontiers. Terry is a brilliant communicator of the Gospel and has a passion for the grace of God. A great book to discover the new covenant of  being alive to grace and dead to the law.  level 3/5

Mark Driscoll is the senior teaching pastor at Mars Hill Church in Seattle.  A superb preacher and teacher who doesn’t pull his punches when it comes to relating the gospel to 21st Century culture.  Death by Love takes the format of letters to actual people from Driscoll’s church.  He follows the example of the Apostles who wrote much of the New Testament in response to questions & difficulties of the Church around them.  Level 3/5

Why do we believe so strongly in the local church? Why do we desire more of the power of the Holy Spirit to work through ChristChurch? Pastor Jim Cymbala shares the lessons he learned when the Spirit ignited his heart and began to move through his people and stirred them to pray like never before.  Great for anyone seeking to live at the center of God’s purposes through experiencing the power of his Spirit. Level 2/5

John is Senior Pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, a 4,000-member church Northern California.  The Life You’ve Always Wanted is an encouraging and challenging approach to a Christian life that’s worth living.  John is a superb writer who mixes great humour withstrong life lessons which most people can relate to.  A great book to take on holiday.  Level 1/5

It’s summer and if you like novels we would recommend Safely Home by Randy Alcorn.The story centres around two theology college students who when finishing their courses go their seperate ways…one to a regular western life and the other back to China where having a faith is risking your life.  Their lives are changed when their paths cross again after many years apart.  Well worth the read! Level 1/5

Adrian Holloway is well known by most teenagers for his involvement at Newday and other large New Frontier events.  The Shock of your life and Aftershock are fictional stories which explore the idea of the afterlife from the eyes of 3 teenagers who have died and find themselves before God…either as their judge…or as their saviour. Written with teenagers in mind both books are a great for a new believer or as a give-away to your non Christian friends to challenge their understanding of life after death.

Stef Liston is leader of Revelation Church London and another key speaker at Mobilise Brighton and Newday so this is another book written with younger adults in mind.  ‘Just Like Us’ explores the idea of how vast and great our God is but how he longs to work with ordinary indiviuals …well….just like us really.

Timothy Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York, turns the story of the  prodigal son on its head.  A refreshing and culturally relevant look at the response to this parable from both the locals at the time and our own response today

Andrew Wilson is a popular speaker at Mobilise and Newday and elder at Kings Church Eastbourne. God stories weaves together, in a very readable manner, key stories from the old and new testament that speak of the gospel… good news.  Incomparable explores the greatness of God through 60 names and descriptions. Andrew is an extremely good communicator and brings insights and revelations that will be used by preachers for years to come.  Get to them before they do!!

C H Spurgeon is probably one of the most influential preachers and writers in the past 200 years. Christ’s Glorious Achievements explores the victories of Jesus life and death.  The language is slightly old fashioned byut the message is as fresh and relavent as it has always been.
